The Channel Islands
Placement on The Channel Islands is only made on specific
request.
The Channel Islands are a small group of craggy islands off
the north-west coast of France, 90 miles south of England. The
official currency in The Channel Islands is British Pounds (£).
The island group consists of Jersey, Guernsey and three smaller
islands - Alderney, Sark and Herm. The official language on
the Channel Islands is English.
The European Hotel Academy places participants in jobs in
the catering and hospitality industry on the
two larger islands, Jersey and Guernsey. These
4 or 5 star hotels are looking for long-term
temporaries who are willing to work for six
to twelve months or longer. Open positions
are most common in several departments: restaurant,
reception desk, kitchen, and also health spa
areas or at the bar. Trained staff, with experience,
are most sought-after. Untrained people, like
students, ideally should have some experience in bars or restaurants,
maybe from part-time jobs. People with no experience in service
are usually placed in restaurants rather than hotels.
The European Hotel Academy also cooperates with restaurants
that are looking for short term temporaries,
for 2 or 3 months. The main tourist season
on The Channel Islands is from April to September,
but some hotels are open year-round. Visitors
to The Channel Islands are mostly from Britain
but also France and Germany. The hotels have high standards
and it is important to them that guests are well looked after
by their staff.
The Channel Islands have a very low crime rate and are therefore
quite a safe place. An incident of purse-snatching would make
the headlines of the local press. Drug trafficking or possession
can lead to life-long prison sentences.
The best connection from Germany to The Channel Islands goes
via London Gatwick or Stansted. London Gatwick
has direct flights to Jersey as well as Guernsey with the airlines “Fly
Be” (www.flybe.com)
or Aurigny (www.aurigny.com)
The cheapest way to book flights is via the internet,
for which you will need a credit card. You can also go to Jersey
or Guernsey on the ferry from the French coast.
